What is Healthy Planet?
We are a network of students and young people across the UK who are passionate about the relationship between global environmental change and health, and about the solutions at a range of levels - from policy to institutional to individual. Healthy Planet is an activity affiliated to Medsin-UK (www.medsin.org), focusing on climate change and health. It was first set up by Sarah Walpole in 2006.
Our key areas of work are:
We believe that young people need to be better informed and to make our voice heard more on these issues. We will be dealing with the health impacts of climate change in our lifetimes, and we also recognise the immense population health benefits that some sustainability measures could bring. Students are in a good position to advocate for strong international climate policy in the interests of global health, of patients in the UK, and of our future patients and communities, and to advocate for policies to improve sustainability of the NHS at a local level.
Our key areas of work are:
- Education: including non-formal training and peer-to-peer teaching and work to get more teaching on these subjects into the curriculum.
- Policy and advocacy: at local, national and international levels, both on climate policy and on local healthcare policy related to sustainability
- Local action: this is integrally linked to the other two, but includes speaker events, films screenings, events with young people in schools and other awareness-raising activities.
- Connecting up with other young people interested in climate & health around the world, working to share resources and build capacity.

Our vision
Our vision is a world in which: there is widespread awareness of the connections between climate change and ecological damage and human health; where the health co-benefits of carbon reduction to populations, and the many benefits of sustainable healthcare are recognised, and realised; and where ambitious and equitable climate mitigation and adaptation policies are put into place, locally, nationally and internationally, in order to protect and promote health.

Our mission
To learn, to teach and to raise awareness, both formally and informally, about the health effects of global environmental change and the benefits of well-chosen mitigation policies;

Organisations we work with
Medsin-UK is a network of students interested in global health - effectively an umbrella organisation within which Healthy Planet is an 'Activity'.
Medsin’s Activities aim to promote health as well as to act upon and educate students about health inequalities in our local and global communities.
The International Federation of Medical Students Association is the world’s largest student body and is comprised of over 1.3 million students in over 100 countries and MedSin is the UK Member Organisation of the IFMSA. There is a transnational IFMSA activity called Healthy Planet International, started by an early member of the UK Healthy Planet branch, but it's not currently very active.
The Climate and Health Council is a network of health professionals informing and advocating on the health benefits of more sustainable lifestyles and the urgency of addressing climate change.
The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare works with key partners to engage healthcare professionals, patients and the wider community in understanding the connections between health and environment and the importance of adopting sustainable practices at work and at home.
