About the conference

Climate change has been called 'the biggest threat to global health of the 21st Century' - by a UCL/Lancet commission report, so it is fitting that this conference should be at UCL - and its impacts are greatest on those who are already marginalised, and who are least responsible for it.  The same is true of the many interrelated environmental changes occuring on our planet, from biodiversity loss to ecosystem degradation and resource depletion.

At the same time, there is a wealth of evidence that tackling these challenges also presents the possibility of major health improvements of 'co-benefits', for example through clean energy, home insulation, improved access to family planning, active travel and smarter food policy.  Moreover, more effective policies in areas such as these can reduce poverty and help tackle health inequalities - both globally, and here in the UK.We are aiming to provide a general introduction to the links between environment and health - including climate change but also related issues like disaster risk reduction, food security, gender, and energy policy.

We want to show how these issues relate to one another and, particularly, to health inequalities and equity considerations, both in the UK and globally.   And we want to show students and young people what they can do to make a difference, including becoming involved in our work and that of some of our partner organisations.

The focus will be split approximately evenly between impacts and how we can reduce them through adaptation and disaster risk reduction, and the health co-benefits of sustainability and climate mitigation policies such as active travel and investment in home insulation.  The weekend's structure is a roughly equal mix of plenary and interactive small workshop sessions.
