Meet the Healthy Planet delegation to COP19!We're pretty excited to have the delegation finalised, having had a very tough decision to make from a pool of fantastic applicants. We're very happy that many of those who applied will still be involved before and during COP as part of our support team, which will mainly - though not exclusively - be based in the UK.
You can find our twitter names in our profiles or at the bottom of this page. To send us all a message, email HealthyPlanetComms@groups.facebook.com. We look forward to hearing from you! |
Marian Hussein Osman
I am a Somali schoolgirl who immigrated to Canada at the outbreak of the civil war in Somalia in my youth. Interested in civic engagement and environmental consciousness from early on, I served for two years as an executive board member on the City of Victoria Youth Council, collaborating with city councillors to offer a youth perspective on municipal issues. Several of these endeavours involved sustainable development within the city’s Capital Regional District (CRD), and the Sierra Club of Canada. I first formally involved myself with environmental politics as an international youth delegate to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Conference of the Parties (COP)17 and have since participated in COP18 and UNCSD Rio+20, in addition to several environmentally-focused Inter-Parliamentary Union conferences with the Transitional Federal Parliament of Somalia. I intend to follow finance closely while at UNFCCC COP19 – follow me on @Maria_Osman for Twitter updates. |
Ricardo Tavares da Costa
Born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal, I became aware of environmental issues at a very early age, in 1994, largely due to culturally embedded environmental concerns, the influence of prominent figures and major events of that time, but also the organisations in which I took part. Since then my environmental track record has evolved greatly, becoming increasingly technical when I finished my postgraduate degree in environmental engineering. For 5 years I have been working as an engineer and author in different countries and for different sectors, focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation. Having travelled the world I have developed an empirical base that enhances my consciousness about global issues and global dynamics, which in turn makes me passionate about the relation between the environment, human health and sustainable development. I am part of the Healthy Planet UK delegation for the UNFCCC COP19 – follow me @rtavarescosta for Twitter updates. |
Alicia Pawluk
Hello! My name is Alicia, and I'm a fourth year medical student. I have just graduated from the University of St Andrews, and I will be completing my clinical years at the University of Manchester this coming September. I’ve always been very passionate about protecting our planet, and have been actively involved in awareness and conservation projects for over 10 years. I grew up in Victoria, on an island off the West Coast of Canada, and as such, I really enjoy being outdoors, partaking in everything from skiing to surfing. I am very passionate about reducing the impact that climate change will have on health and healthcare, especially for developing nations. You can follow me on twitter at @alipawluk for updates. I am thrilled at the opportunity to attend COP19 with Healthy Planet in November! |
Tim Dobermann
I am a finalist studying Economics at the University of Warwick. Having spent much of my life living in the developing world, I have become very interested in the impacts of climate change on the socioeconomic development of countries across the globe, particularly in Africa. More generally, as curator of TEDxWarwick this year (www.tedxwarwick.com), I am a firm believer of the power of ideas in promoting awareness and sparking discussion on many of today's most-pressing issues. In the future I plan to undertake further study in the cross-section of socioeconomic development and the environment. You can follow me on twitter at @timdobermann n my free time I am an avid sports enthusiast, competing regularly in athletics and following all football fixtures very closely! Reserve delegates |
Gabriele Messori
I am currently studying for an Atmospheric Physics Ph.D. at Imperial College London. My research focuses on atmospheric dynamics. Before this, I obtained an M.Sci in Theoretical Physics which was also from Imperial. Throughout my academic career I have been actively involved in organising seminar series, presentations and conferences focusing on climate science and policy. I have a keen interest in the design and implementation of health and environmental policies related to climate change, and in the contribution science can provide to sustainable development. To this end, I campaign for more effective communication between scientists and policy makers on environmental issues. |
Connor Schwartz
Hi, I'm Connor, a recent graduate from Warwick University, where I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I have been involved in activism and campaigns throughout university, on concerns as diverse as climate change, food politics and worker rights. I am passionate about the intersectionality of political issues, especially environmentalism, feminism and labour movements. Another interest of mine is the value of a diversity of political tactics, and I have engaged with climate justice both academically in my undergraduate dissertation and through direct action. Outside of politics, I enjoy film, literature and electronic music. Healthy Planet Committee delegates |
Izzy Braithwaite – National Coordinator
I became actively involved in work around climate and health during my first year of medical school at Cambridge, having been interested in both environmental issues and global health for several years before that. That led me to study ecology and global change in my intercalated BSc year, and during that year, as environment coordinator for the Cambridge Hub, I also organised the 2012 Climate Forum and co-founded a campaign called Energise Cambridge. I took on the position of national coordinator at Healthy Planet last summer, and my main aim is to create a more sustainable network of students who are informed, engaged and passionate about acting on climate change, health and sustainable healthcare by the time I hand over the role. To get a deeper understanding of the issues, I've just spent a year at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine doing a Masters' in Public Health, before starting clinical school at UCL this September. I'm on twitter at @izzybraithwaite. Some of my favourite things include being outdoors, languages, cooking and travelling. |
Jonny Elliot - International Lead & HP representative at COP18 (attendance at COP19 tba)
Last year I completed a Public Health Masters’ from Queens’ University Belfast, having graduated with an undergraduate Geography degree which was also from there. In 2012 I spent the summer interning in the Centre for Global Health at the National Cancer Institute in Washington D.C. I'm particularly interested global health, international relations and social justice and see climate change and health as at the intersection of all three, so I applied to represent Healthy Planet at COP18 last year. I’m going to be actively involved again this year and very much looking forward to the training weekend to meet everyone face-to-face. I've volunteered with Tearfund and the International Justice Mission, and co-founded an anti-trafficking collective. I'm on twitter at @jelliott1989. In my spare time I'm actively involved in my local church and am a keen sportsman. |
